What is an eSIM and its operational mechanism?

Updated April 22, 2026

An eSIM, or embedded Subscriber Identity Module, is a digital SIM card integrated directly into your device's hardware. Unlike traditional physical SIMs, there's no need for a physical card slot or manual insertion. Its operational mechanism is akin to a digital provisioning process: you receive a QR code, scan it with your compatible device, and the eSIM profile — containing your network credentials — is downloaded and activated. This allows for instant network switching and management of multiple profiles, ideal for digital nomads who require flexible, high-data connectivity.
